BEHAVIORAL
health disorders are common in the
United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent
of Americans ages 18 and older—about one in four adults—
experience a diagnosable behavioral health disorder in a
given year.
What is a behavioral health disorder?
Behavioral health disorders include: • Major depression.
• Bipolar disorder. • Anxiety disorders. • Schizophrenia.
• Eating disorders. • Attention disorders. • Personality
disorders. • Post-traumatic stress disorders. • Substance
abuse disorders.
What many people don’t realize is that alcohol and drug
problems also are mental illnesses. Many mental health treatment
providers also treat alcohol and drug problems. Science has
shown us that depression, anxiety and schizophrenia and a large
number of other psychiatric disorders are true biologic illnesses
just like diabetes and high blood pressure. It has also shown us
that drug and alcohol abuse and dependence are true biologic
illnesses that can cause long-lasting, and sometimes permanent,
changes in the brain and body.
Our providers
Addiction is a sickness, and many mental health providers
are specially trained to deal with individuals with the sickness
of alcohol and other drug abuse.
