to allow family members to see Isabella
even though she was in the NICU.
Thanks to a new webcam system called
NICVIEW, members of the Flowerette
family as far away as South Africa were
able to see Isabella simply by logging on
to a computer.
The NICVIEW system consists of
a camera in each room of the NICU
that can be positioned over each baby.
Families are given secure, encrypted
login information that can be passed
along to friends and family.
“I wasn’t aware of the camera system
when I researched the Aspirus NICU, so
it was quite a surprise—and a very happy
one at that, because when you have a baby,
you want to show it off,” Bonny said. “I
wanted people to see Isabella, and the
wonderful thing about the camera system
is that everyone could see her but I was
also able to protect her from germs and
stuff that you worry about in the NICU.”
Just a click away
Bonny stayed in Isabella’s room in the
NICU the entire eight days she was there,
but Ryan was unable to always be there due
to work and other responsibilities. Bonny
said her family used NICVIEW all the
time, and Ryan would log on during lunch
breaks at work and spend time with Isabella
even though he couldn’t physically be there.
“It was cute, because you can’t make a
lot of noise in the NICU, so I’d position
the camera on me and the baby and we’d
text back and forth to communicate in
real time,” Bonny said. “My family would
text me things like ‘I want to see her feet
and ears,’ or ‘I can see her yawning.’”
The NICVIEW webcam system can
be accessed securely on a computer,
tablet or smartphone and is available
to all families with a baby in the NICU.
Funding was made possible through
community support of the 2013 Aspirus
Women’s Golf Classic.
